“Outsider” Chaffetz Embraced by GOP Leaders

It’s good to know that an “outsider” can still shake up the establishment if he or she has the courage and tenacity to buck the status quo. It’s also good to know that, in Pat Buchanan’s memorable phrase, “peasants with pitchforks” can start a grassroots campaign, with no paid staff and no party backing and still pull off a coup.

Kudos to Jason Chaffetz and his “peasants with pitchforks” on their big primary win and now it’s on to Washington and let’s work for change there as well.

The Republican Party establishment, which took a few shots from 3rd District candidate Jason Chaffetz earlier in the campaign, is now embracing Chaffetz following his defeat of Rep. Chris Cannon in a June primary.

Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. endorsed Chaffetz on Wednesday, praising his “tenacity.” And Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett, who backed Cannon during the primary, will host a Washington fundraiser for Chaffetz next week.

“At the end of the day, Republicans need to come together, and this takes us one step further in that direction,” Chaffetz said of the endorsements. “We’re all Republicans. We disagree on some issues, but we’ve got to beat the Democrats come November, so I very much appreciate their support. I need it.”

Huntsman spent the primary campaign on the sidelines, even though Chaffetz ran Huntsman’s campaign for governor and was his chief of staff during much of the governor’s first year in office.

“As a member of Congress, Jason’s dogged tenacity will serve the people of Utah well,” Huntsman said in a statement Wednesday. “Jason has worked determinedly in his public service. His dedication and ability to dive into hard issues will be a formidable addition to Utah’s congressional delegation.”

But during his speech at the state Republican Convention in May, Chaffetz got loud applause by taking a shot at the governor’s stance on climate change.

“Jon Huntsman, as much as I like you, you’re wrong on global warming. It’s a farce,” Chaffetz said, as Huntsman and his family stood just off-stage.

Lt. Col. Russell to the Rescue: The Man Who Could Topple Jack Murtha

Michelle Malkin writes in NATIONAL REVIEW.COM about the quixotic quest by an active duty Army officer to unseat the (hopefully) disgraced King of Pork and the man who smeared the Marines involved in the attack in Haditha, Jack Murtha. If ever a craven politician deserved to be turned out of office, it is Murtha.

Please take the time to read Michelle’s article and if you live in Pennsylvania, check out Lt. Col. William Russell and his campaign to unseat the man who tried to convict the Marines in the press.

By Michelle Malkin

A jaw-dropping political miracle may be on the horizon. No, I’m not talking about the second coming of the Obamessiah. I’m talking about the long-deserved comeuppance of troop-smearing, pork-feasting, scandal-tainted Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania.

The 18-term congressman’s challenger, staunch conservative Republican newcomer William Russell, raised nearly $670,000 in the second fundraising quarter. Earmark king Murtha scraped together a measly $119,000. Russell’s underdog campaign bested Murtha without the perks of incumbency, national name recognition, big PAC donations or mainstream media support.

Even more amazing: The 45-year-old Russell, a Desert Storm veteran, former Army lieutenant colonel and Army reservist who survived the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, was not even publicly campaigning during the quarter. He is on active duty with the Army until after Aug. 1 and is barred from actively campaigning until then.

If all that didn’t make this enough of an inspiring David and Goliath story: In February, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that Russell had failed to collect enough signatures to make the primary ballot. But Russell refused to give up on his goal of permanently redeploying Murtha from his entrenched seat of power in Washington. The GOP neophyte persevered on a shoestring budget and won more than 4,000 write-in votes in the spring to earn a spot on the general election ballot. According to Russell’s campaign manager and veteran GOP activist Peg Luksik, the bulk of contributions from about 16,000 donors in the second quarter were less than $50.

Questions About Romney?

July 22nd, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

I am more than willing to answer questions from Huckabee supporters or people who in general have questions about Mitt Romney as long as the person who asks the question refrain from bashing the Governor; the same will be done on my side. So give me links and articles and questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability!

The Pervasive Power and Far Reaching Influence of CommittedToRomney.Com Extends to Salt Lake City, Utah

I was tempted to refrain from posting the results of a couple of my articles on the TribTalk site from last week because of my deep seated modesty when I thought….No, it’s not fair for me to with hold the results of our collective efforts to influence the body politic, just to satisfy my natural humility. :)

That being said, I thought it might be fun to take a look at how our conservative message resonates even on one of the most liberal sites that I am aware of.

Wasn’t it great news when Rush’s mega contract was announced? Talk about a win-win situation. Liberal radio is virtually non-existent as the last attempt to get anyone to listen to their dopey message, Air America, has …

“It’s Time To Replace John Kerry With One of Us”

July 22nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Congress, Jeff Beatty, John Kerry

I just got an email from the Massachusett’s Senatorial Campaign of Jeff Beatty (R) who is running for John Kerry’s seat. They have just put up a petition on his website, asking Mass. resident’s to show their support for Jeff Beatty’s plan to replace one of the U.S. Congress’ most liberal Senators with a conservative who supports tax relief for the middle class and enforcing our border laws.

For any of our Mittheads who are residents of Massachusetts, please click onto Mr. Beatty’s website and sign the petition. This may be the first real opportunity in 24 years to replace this Uber-Liberal with a Senator who can relate to the challenges of middle-class Americans.

~~John Cronin~~

http://petition.jeffbeatty.com/

Dear Voters of Massachusetts,

For the past 24 years, John Kerry has enjoyed the status of being your junior senator. This elite millionaire has a history of supporting higher taxes for the middle and working classes, and in the last 8 years has not passed a single bill into law. Every American is hurt by Kerry’s time in the senate, but only you, the citizens of Massachusetts, can vote him out. So this November, we are asking you to do just that.

John Forbes Kerry has earned the great distinction of being ranked as the richest American senator, with an estimated personal net worth of $200 million (not including his wife’s fortune). And yet, when he’s not windsurfing, spending time in one of his mansions or boating in his multi-million dollar yacht, Kerry is crushing middle and working class families and small businesses with his pro-tax agenda.
Here is a small sampling of the votes cast by John Kerry in the first half of 2008 alone:

• John Kerry voted against amendments to provide extensions of tax relief for renewable energy production, combat pay for soldiers, and higher-education.

• John Kerry voted against a Federal income tax deduction for individuals purchasing health insurance outside the workplace.

• John Kerry voted against a bill to protect small businesses, family ranches and farms from the Death Tax.

Kerry was advised to look more “presidential” by voting to support the Iraq war, and when public opinion shifted against it, so did his position. Who could forget this quote: “I actually did vote for the $87 billion dollars, before I voted against it.” Kerry voted to send America’s children and loved-ones into a war purely for his own personal and political gains. When his agenda changed, so did his vote — now in direct opposition to the very same troops he helped put in harm’s way.

As citizens of one of the other 49 United States, we cannot vote to replace John Forbes Kerry this November, but this does not mean his actions have not adversely affected us all. So we will support you in Massachusetts. We will donate, we will blog, we will call talk radio, but we, the rest of the United States of America, must rely on you, the citizens of the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to end Kerry’s 24-year reign in the senate and replace him with Jeff Beatty, a Senator who will fight for every American family, every American job and for the protection of the Country we all love.

Obama’s Flips

July 22nd, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

Dick Morris

After vowing to eschew private fundraising and take public financing, he has now refused public money.

Once he threatened to filibuster a bill to protect telephone companies from liability for their cooperation with national security wiretaps; now he has voted for the legislation.

Turning his back on a lifetime of support for gun control, he now recognizes a Second Amendment right to bear arms in the wake of the Supreme Court decision.

Formerly, he told the Israeli lobby that he favored an undivided Jerusalem. Now he says he didn’t mean it.

From a 100 percent pro-choice position, he now has migrated to expressing doubts about allowing partial-birth abortions.

For the first time, he now speaks highly of using church-based institutions to deliver public services to the poor.

Having based his entire campaign on withdrawal from Iraq, he now pledges to consult with the military first.

During the primary, he backed merit pay for teachers - but before the union a few weeks ago, he opposed it.

After specifically saying in the primaries that he disagreed with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) proposal to impose Social Security taxes on income over $200,000 and wanted to tax all income, he has now adopted the Clinton position.

McCain May Be Zeroing In On A Running Mate

More buzz in the national press about a possible announcement (we are told within the next 48 hours or so) regarding Sen. John McCain’s selection of his running mate. If it’s Mitt, Obama just got some world class competition.

I was doing some neighborhood canvassing this past Sunday for Dr. Bob Onder’s Congressional campaign and the two hottest topics were: 1. Illegal immigration (voters want the borders secured) and 2. Energy prices (voters want domestic drilling started, yesterday). As we Mittheads know, Gov. Romney is pitch perfect on these issues as well as many others and his coming onboard right in the middle of Obama’s World Apology Tour would change the campaign calculus dramatically.

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -

Yet another town-hall meeting isn’t doing the trick. Neither is dropping in on a former Republican president. So just what can John McCain do to draw attention away from his showy Democratic rival? Pick a running mate, perhaps.

Speculation swirled Tuesday that McCain might name his vice presidential partner within the next few days - right in the middle of Barack Obama’s overseas tour.

McCain aides were not helping tamp down the speculation with their comments, often made late in the afternoon, of “no announcement today.”

But what about tomorrow? Or where? On Tuesday, McCain campaigned in New Hampshire, not all that far from a lakeside summer home of vanquished GOP rival Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor. Romney was nowhere to be seen. Well, it wasn’t really that close to his lakeside home.

One member of the audience told McCain he seemed like a very “forgiving” man. “Have you forgiven Mitt Romney?” he asked the senator.

Amid laughter, McCain said, “Mitt has been of tremendous help to my campaign. … He does a better job for me than he did for himself.”

Last Sunday, McCain was in the Bronx at a Yankees game with another former rival, one-time New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. “You hear all kinds of stuff,” Giuliani later said, “but I’m not thinking about anything but helping to get him elected.”

The campaign is also not very open about where McCain is going next, keeping scheduling matters close to the vest. And that adds to the frenzy.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: HERE ARE TWO WEBSITES THAT ARE REPORTING THAT MITT IS McCAIN'S CHOICE FOR VP RUNNING MATE. I CAN'T VERIFY WHETHER THE REPORTS ARE TRUE OR NOT. THIS IS MEANT STRICTLY AS A FYI.]

What I See

July 22nd, 2008 | 36 Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

Real Clear Politics

In reviewing the battle-ground states’ polls, I am ever more adamant that having Governor Romney will catapult Republicans out of their slumber and stupor and invigorate them to create a grass-roots organization to assure this country stays Red. With the ability to raise vasts amounts of money, it would do good for McCain to announce his VP incredibly soon in order to have the impact of the name recognition. What I mean is, how much more forceful would a fund-raiser be if it had - VP-Mitt Romney To Host John McCain for President Fund-raiser @?

I’ve talked to several Republican buds and they are discouraged. They feel as if campaigning is a lost cause and will only result in a more painful loss in November. Perhaps some of you feel this way and are at a loss as to what to do. Or maybe some are still angry about the fact that McCain is our nominee. I too feel upset; could I have worked a bit longer or a bit more intently on removing fact from fiction regarding the LDS-church? Unfortunately, the factors didn’t align themselves in our favor this election cycle but the past must not predicate the future…

Regardless of the opinion set forth by John McCain our adherence to Mitt Romney and conservative principles is firm. John McCain needs you. Not for his cause but for the good of the nation. Would you really rather vote for Obama then McCain? Think about it. Having Willard on the ticket will certainly impact the affect of winning this year but if he isn’t, be sure your fighting for the right side…

Decision ‘08: Reading Between the Lines

July 21st, 2008 | 14 Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

Psychology Today by Jay Dixit

Mitt Romney

Exemplary quote: “No nation gave more, shed more precious lives, and took less for itself than America… America’s goodness and leadership in the world must be as bright and bold as our military might!”

Subtext: Romney’s language is über-patriotic, which usually signals a person without a platform.

Rhetorical style: Romney’s hortatory gusto—his use of adjectives, religious imagery, patriotic language, and references to voters—embodies old-fashioned, all-American, Fourth of July kind of language. It’s most often used by someone without a platform because it gives them something to talk about.

Handwriting: Mitt Romney’s letter forms are highly original and written with speed, revealing a fast, creative thinker,” says Lowe. “He’s highly intuitive and is able to pick up the mood of a room the instant he walks in. The long, simplified downstroke on the y says he doesn’t like to waste time on non-essential details.”

It’s the Rules: Utah to Vote for Romney

Scrippsnews.com reports on Utah’s rule that mandates that the delegates must vote for the winner of that state’s primary. As you know, Gov. Romney blew the competition away with a 90% landslide vote in Utah’s primary this past spring.

Won’t it be great to hear the chairperson of Utah’s delegation intone: “Mr./Madam Chairman, the great state of Utah proudly casts it’s 36 votes for Gov. Mitt Romney for President of the United States of America!”

~~John Cronin~~

WASHINGTON –

The music will be rising into a crescendo, the hall glowing with red, blue and white stars, confetti at the waiting, when Utah delegates take the microphone in the nomination of John McCain for president and cast their ballots for — Mitt Romney.

It’s not that Utah Republicans love Romney so much they can’t bring themselves to back McCain or that they won’t let go of Romney’s failed presidential bid. It’s the rules.

As it stands, all 36 of the state’s delegates are bound on the first ballot to vote for the winner of Utah’s Republican primary: Romney, who nabbed a whopping 90 percent of the vote.
